How often should you restring?
A table for every string and every schedule, from the same estimate the app runs.
A regular player who plays about three hours a week should restring polyester about every 7 weeks, and natural gut about every 14 weeks.
From Racquet’s estimate, with play spread evenly and no matches. Matches bring it a little sooner.By string and schedule
Find your strings and how much you play. Each cell is how long until Racquet would recommend a restring, from the day they went in.
| Strings | 1 h a week | 2 h a week | 3 h a week | 4 h a week | 6 h a week | 8 h a week |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polyester | 13 wk | 10 wk | 7 wk | 6 wk | 4 wk | 3 wk |
| Hybrid | 16 wk | 12 wk | 9 wk | 7 wk | 5 wk | 4 wk |
| Multifilament | 20 wk | 15 wk | 11 wk | 9 wk | 6 wk | 5 wk |
| Synthetic gut | 19 wk | 14 wk | 10 wk | 8 wk | 6 wk | 4 wk |
| Natural gut | 6 mo | 19 wk | 14 wk | 11 wk | 8 wk | 6 wk |
* Time in the frame decides these: at that much play, the string’s time limit comes before its hours.
Weeks until Restring recommended, by hours of play a week
Rules of thumb
- Play once a week? Time decides. At an hour a week, polyester is due in about 13 weeks, mostly from time in the frame rather than play.
- Play most days? Hours decide. At eight hours a week, polyester lasts about 3 weeks.
- Hit hard, restring sooner. Competitive players get 0.6 times the hours: at six hours a week, polyester is due in about 3 weeks.
- Feel matters more than any table. If your strings feel dead before the date, restring.
Where these numbers come from
Every number on this page comes from Racquet’s string estimate: hours of play or time in the frame, whichever comes first, with defaults from Tennis Warehouse University, Tennisnerd, Tennis Companion, Wilson and Babolat. The method, its formula and its limits are set out in How Racquet estimates string health.

Know exactly when.
Racquet works it out for each of your racquets from the play you log, and can remind you when a restring is due soon.
